Study Title: Investigating Usage of TikTok for Information and Advice-Seeking

Researcher(s): Blase Ur, Kevin Bryson, Margaret Jennings

Summary:

We are researchers at the University of Chicago investigating how TikTok is used to find information and to seek advice. We will ask you to download your TikTok data and share a de-identified (pseudonymized) version of your watch history, search history, and ad interests, not requiring anything else to be shared with us.

This study has four parts with the compensation and time required listed in parentheses:

  1. Complete a demographic survey and request your data download from TikTok. ($1, 5 minutes)
  2. (This part) If you consent to sharing your TikTok watch history, search history, and ads interest data, you will securely donate it to us and complete a survey. ($12, 10 minutes)
  3. Two weeks after completing the initial data donation, we will invite you to participate in further data donation. In this part you will request your data download from TikTok. ($1, 3 minutes).
  4. Securely donate the new data download to us and complete a survey. ($12, 10 minutes)

Your participation is voluntary.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Over the age of 18.
  • Use TikTok regularly.
  • You are willing to download your TikTok data and are willing to share with us de-identified copies of your watch history, search history, and ad interests sections.

Incentives:

  • You will be compensated $26 for completing all four parts of the study. Each time you request your data download from TikTok you will receive $1. For sharing the data download with us and completing the associated survey you will receive $12.
  • Note: Without your consent to donate watch historysearch history, and ad interests you will be unable to proceed in the study past the initial demographics survey.

Confidentiality, Risks and Benefits:

Your participation in this study involves sharing your personal TikTok data with us. We take steps to protect your data by using a widely trusted data donation platform, DDM,  to process data on your device, so personal information like your email address, username, IP address, and other non-necessary information TikTok collects is never held by us. We will not collect your “Comments”, “Followers”, “App Settings”, and other segments that are not relevant to this study. We require your explicit consent to each portion of the data that we collect. Taking part in this study may not benefit you directly, but your participation may help us to gain a better understanding of certain mechanisms used to personalize your TikTok experience. Your Prolific ID will be used to distribute payment to you but will not be stored with the research data we collect with you.

  • If you decide to withdraw from this study, the researchers will ask you if the information already collected from you can be used.
  • De-identified information from this study may be used for future research studies or shared with other researchers for future research without your additional informed consent.
